On-location Sketch Book Studies

Here are some recent sketchbook entries. These were all quick sketches (ten minutes or so), done on location in pen and ink and painted later in the studio. The application of paint took another ten minutes.

I was focused on the big idea: composition, value and mood, and pretty much avoided any detail. Light and shadow were important as well and I made expressing that a priority.

  1. Nice pieces. I'm enjoying this art. One of the things that I have gotten from looking at your work and others (Charles Reid, for instance) is that not everything in the work, other than the main element(s), requires a high degree of finish or detail. It's this lesson that I am applying to my own work, whether for commercial or for personal use. I must say that it's a breath of fresh air to work in that manner.
